Moscow, 4 November - RUSAL, one of the world’s leading aluminium producers, announced today that its Nikolayev Alumina Refinery (Ukraine) has received the ISO 14001 environmental management system certification. Det Norske Veritas (DNV) of Norway, an independent registrar organization, carried out the assessments in August, 2004.
Steve Hodgson, Managing Director, Alumina Division, said, «I am delighted that the Nikolayev Refinery today meets the highest international environmental practices. RUSAL is sensitive to the environmental impacts of its operations, and our aim is to ensure that growth occurs in a sustainable manner.»
The Nikolayev Alumina Refinery is the first RUSAL alumina refinery to achieve this certification. To date six other RUSAL facilities are ISO 14001 certified, including the ROSTAR beverage can plant, Sayanogorsk Aluminium Smelter, Krasnoyarsk Aluminium Smelter, RUSAL SAYANAL, Samara Metallurgical Plant and Dmitrov Metallurgical plant. The Achinsk Alumina Refinery has undergone DNV's assessment and is expected to receive ISO 14001 certification soon. The remaining RUSAL plants are in various stages of assessment intended to lead to certification.
