Possessing scarce domestic energy resources, Japan is the world’s fourth-largest country in terms of energy consumption. With indigenous explored gas reserves averaging 40 bcm, the country’s annual demand for gas accounts for some 80 bcm.

The share of gas in Japan’s energy mix stands at 13 per cent and, under international experts’ estimates, will reach 16 per cent by 2020.

Japan imports almost 100 per cent of overall gas consumption in the form of liquefied natural gas and is the world’s top LNG importer. In 2004, the country imported 76.95 bcm of LNG largely originating from Indonesia, Malaysia and a string of Middle East countries.

Chiyoda Corporation was established in 1948. With the head office located in Yokohama, Chiyoda has branches in 19 countries of the world. The company’s business covers integrated engineering and construction services. Chiyoda is a prominent LNG plant contractor with its share in the global LNG plant construction portfolio making up 60%.

In particular, Chiyoda is a leading contractor for an LNG plant, LNG tank and oil export terminal within the Sakhalin II oil & gas project.
