Moscow. 5 July 2004. In the first half of 2004, the power plants of RAO "UES of Russia" generated 331.7 billion kWh of electricity, up 2.1 percent on the corresponding period of 2003, thus ensuring an increase in energy consumption in the country.
Throughout Russia, the electricity consumption over the period totalled 460 billion kWh, an increase of 2 percent in year-on-year terms.
The increase in electricity generation at RAO "UES of Russia" in H1 2004 was primarily ensured by the hydropower plants, whose output grew over the period by 16 percent to 65.1 billion kWh. Electricity generation by the thermal power plants of RAO "UES of Russia" stood at 266.6 billion kWh, which is nearly the same level as in H1 2003. Such changes in electricity output is due to the fact that RAO "UES of Russia" has changed the production targets for some thermal power plants and increased the targets for hydroelectric power plants, which have a lower cost of electricity. In particular, this has helped to effectively use the high water inflow of Siberian rivers and reduce fuel costs.
