Energy companies' repair crews restore power in some areas after outages caused by heavy snow

Moscow, 14 December 2005. Energy companies' repair teams have restored power in some inhabited locations of the Moscow Region, Ryazan Region, Vladimir Region, Nizhny Novgorod Region, Ivanovo Region, and Ulyanovsk Region after the power outages caused by heavy snow.

The situation has significantly improved in the Ivanovo Region, Moscow Region, Vladimir Region and Ryazan Region. Active restoration work is now underway in the Nizhny Novgorod Region and Ulyanovsk Region. Currently, the efforts to restore electricity to the affected areas are carried out by 190 reinforced energy repair teams with over 1,000 members using special equipment. As a matter of first priority, the power is restored to schools, hospitals, and other important public infrastructure facilities.

At the same time, the continuing fall of snow leads to new blackouts.

In the areas hit by the adverse weather, 572 transformer substations of 6-10 kV were de-energized as at 1:00 pm on 14 December 2005. About 200 inhabited locations still remain without power.

The power outages were caused by the heavy snow fall in the central regions of Russia. Accumulation of snow, changing temperatures, and gusty winds downed power lines, causing power blackouts.

The energy companies of RAO "UES of Russia" working in the areas affected by the snowstorm have put special arrangements in place to control the power restoration efforts and created emergency response centers. The repairs are carried out round the clock in close conjunction with the local civil defence and emergency agencies.
