AO MOSENERGO implements environmental measures that are aimed at reducing the damage to the atmosphere and water caused by company facilities.

In particular under this program, AO MOSENERGO plans to install low-toxin burners on four boilers this year. As a result, the emissions of nitrogen oxide to the atmosphere (produced by boilers in the process of burning fuel) will be cut in half. Soon AO MOSENERGO will continue to equip other boilers with similar burners.

This year, AO MOSENERGO also plans to reduce noise levels at power stations. For this purpose, sources of noise at CHPs will be equipped with special noise-reducing devices that will make it possible to reduce the noise impact in the vicinities.

In addition, AO MOSENERGO representatives take part in projects aimed at reducing greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. These projects (they also involve the participation of foreign companies and reduction of CO₂ emissions to the atmosphere) were discussed at a seminar organized by RAO UES. The topic of the seminar was the problem of implementing the Kyoto protocol. It is expected that this agreement may lead to additional investments into the power sector helping to reduce emissions and implementing new technologies. Participation in such joint projects involving foreign partnerships would enable power companies to upgrade and replace equipment at power stations that run on solid fuel with steam and gas equipment. This is profitable both in terms of environmental protections and economics.

Last year, the total volume of emissions from AO MOSENERGO power stations fell against 2003 amounts by almost 7.8%. The emission of pollutants at Moscow CHPs fell even more—by nearly 17%. The emissions of sulphur dioxide, solid particles and nitrogen oxide at AO MOSENERGO power stations went down by 33.3%, 31.7% and 9.4% respectively. None of AO MOSENERGO power stations exceeded requirements by any normative.
