On working meeting between Alexey Miller and Alfonso Dulanto

Gazprom’s Headquarters today has hosted a working meeting between Alexey Miller, Gazprom’s Management Committee Chairman and Alfonso Dulanto, Mining Minister of the Republic of Chile.

The meeting addressed bilateral cooperation deepening in the gas business, laying special emphasis on Gazprom’s potential involvement in Chile’s state-funded program on setting up LNG reception & distribution infrastructure as well as in LNG supplies to Chile.

Alexey Miller and Alfonso Dulanto confirmed mutual interest in sealing a General Agreement between Gazprom and Chile’s Government with the view of further promoting cooperation in the oil & gas sector.

Reference:

As of 1 January 2005, Chile’s proved natural gas reserves (clustering near the Strait of Magellan, southern Chile) accounted for 90 bcm. Over 2004, the country extracted and consumed 1.1 and 8.2 bcm of natural gas, respectively, with the bulk of the gas imported from Argentina.

The share of natural gas, oil, hydropower generation and coal in Chile’s energy balance accounts for 29, 41, 20 and 10 percent, respectively. About 90 percent of overall natural gas is used to generate electricity and supply industrial customers.

Founded in 1950, Empresa Nacional del Petroleo (ENAP) is currently holding a monopolistic position on the domestic oil & gas market. As stipulated by Chile’s legislation, the post of ENAP’s President must be held by the Mining Minister. Alfonso Dulanto occupied the position in 2002.

In the late 1990s, seven gas pipelines with the overall length of 3.2 thou km have been constructed between Chile and Argentina. Currently, Chile nurtures plans to build a nationwide 520-km-long pipeline.
