North-West Telecom

May 6, 2005

The wiremen of the Republic of Komi celebrated their professional holiday with a book about the history of telecommunications in the Republic and a new exhibition in the Communications Museum

On 5 May on the eve of the Victory day and the professional holiday of wiremen, Svyaz Komi, the branch  North West Telecom JSC, organized an opening ceremony for the new exhibition in the Communications Museum. The branch's regional director V.A. Kozlov also presented a book on the history of telecommunications in the Republic of Komi “…from Morse code to Internet” published for this occasion.

The ceremony in the branch main hall was attended by veterans of the company, employees, honorary guests. In his address the Head of the Republic of Komi V.A. Torlopov noted that the regional government supported all initiatives of Svyaz Komi employees. He added that North-West Telecom made a “considerable contribution into the development of economics and industry in the Republic, but most importantly it worked for the benefit of the population of region”. V.A. Torlopov emphasized the special contribution of the wiremen of Russia and the Komi Republic into the victory in the Great Patriotic War. “Therefore it is remarkable, that the book and the new exhibition in the Communications Museum came out just before the Great Day”, - the leader of Komi said.

The branch regional director V.A. Kozlov said that the preparation of the book and the new exhibition had lasted for several years and required a lot of diligent laborious work. However because the wiremen always maintain their traditions and respect their history and veterans, the work continued despite all difficulties. “Because an enterprise is a big family. And a good family always respects the elders. This means that such enterprise has future”, - V.A. Kozlov emphasized.

Copies of “… from Morse Code to the Internet” were sent to local and regional libraries. Therefore the materials that have been found in archives, veterans’ reminisces, collected in all towns and regions, are now available not only to the company, but to the whole Republic. Any reader with interest in Komi history will have access to this book.

Everybody present warmly welcomed the veterans of the war and the labour. The government of the Republic and the management of their branch sent them flowers and letters of gratitude. Furthermore ten current workers who now ensure reliable telecommunications in the Republic were awarded the title of “Honorary wireman of the Republic of Komi”.
