Unified Energy System

June 16, 2005

First phase of modernization project completed at the Yakutskaya TPP

Moscow. 16 June 2005. OAO "Yakutskenergo" has completed the first phase of the project to modernize the Yakutskaya TPP. The obsolescent 25 MW units of the power plant have been replaced with 45 MW gas turbine units.

The modernization has helped increase the power plant's installed capacity from 240 MW to 320 MW of electricity and from 320 Gcal/h to 572 Gcal/h of heat.

The Yakutskaya TPP supplies power to nine uluses (districts) of the Central energy area in the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) and accounts for up to 94% of all electricity supply in the city of Yakutsk and 54% of heat supplied to the city's heating network.

The Yakutskaya TPP is the only power plant in the world whose gas turbine units may burn natural gas or diesel fuel. The power plant operates as a classical combined heat power plant generating electricity and heat.

At present, the Yakutskaya TPP has 8 power units. The second phase of the modernization project scheduled for the period after 2010 provides for the replacement of three more power units.

The power plant's modernization is part of the programme "Development of the Electricity Sector in the Republic of Sakha for the Period until 2010 and the Prospects until 2015". The Programme also includes the replacement of diesel power plants with power transmission lines from the Yakutskaya CHPP. Implementation of this project will help reduce the cost of electricity in the Republic at least fivefold.
