Society for Encouragement of Russian Poetry with support of RAO "UES of Russia" institutes Poet Russian National Prize

Moscow, 27 April 2005. The Society for Encouragement of Russian Poetry with the support of RAO "UES of Russia" has instituted the Poet Russian National Prize, which will be awarded, on an annual basis, to one of the outstanding poets in modern Russia. This was announced today by the by Mikhail Shvydkoy, Head of the Federal Agency for Culture and Cinema, Leonid Gozman, member of the Management Board of RAO "UES of Russia", and Sergey Chuprynin, Prize Coordinator.

The Poet Prize laureate will be selected by the Board of Trustees of the Society for Encouragement of Russian Poetry. The Society was created in April 2005 on the initiative of a group of literary critics and theorists of literature with the support of RAO "UES of Russia".

The Society's Board of Trustees includes Alexander Lavrov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Nikolay Bogomolov, Professor of the Moscow State University, Vladimir Novikov, Professor of the Moscow State University, Dmitry Bak, Professor of the Russian State University for the Humanities, Andrey Aryev and Yakov Gordin, Co-editors of the Zvezda Magazine (St.-Petersburg), and literary critics—Irina Rodnyanskaya, Pavel Kryuchkov, Samuil Lurye, and Andrey Nemzer.

The Executive Director of the Society is Sergey Chuprynin, Professor, Editor-in-Chief of the Znamya Magazine.

The Prize may be awarded only to the living poets writing in Russian, regardless of their ethnicity or place of residence. The Prize may be awarded to one person only once. It is not possible to divide the Prize among two or more laureates, or to award the Prize posthumously.

Nominations for the Prize may be made only by the members of the Board of Trustees of the Society.

The first laureate of the Poet Russian National Prize will be announced by the Board of Trustees in May 2005. The laureate's name will be determined by secret ballot by a panel consisting of the members of the Board of Trustees, or formed on the latter's decision

The laureate of the Poet prize will receive a Diploma, a Badge, and a money prize in the amount equivalent to 50,000 US dollars.

Apart from awarding the Poet Prize, the Society for Encouragement of Russian Poetry intends to launch a broad campaign intended to draw public attention to the modern poetry, to encourage the creative endeavours by young and talented poets, and promote research in classical and modern Russian literature.
