EURELECTRIC, CIS Electric Power Council hold 2nd International Seminar in Moscow

Moscow. 24 November 2005. The 2nd joint EURELECTRIC – CIS Electric Power Council (CIS EPC) Seminar "Electricity Market from Lisbon to Vladivostok" was held in Moscow today. The Seminar was attended by the Chairman of the Management Board of RAO "UES of Russia" Anatoly Chubais, who is also the President of the CIS Electric Power Council, EURELECTRIC Vice President Lars Josefsson, members of the European Parliament, senior officials of the European Commission, and executives of the major energy companies of the EU and the CIS.

The Seminar will discuss the results of the joint efforts undertaken by the CIS EPC and EURELECTRIC to prepare for the EU and CIS electricity networks interconnection and convergence of market conditions. Besides that, the Seminar participants discussed the emerging trends in the formation of electricity markets and developed common approaches to key issues of further development of the European and Eurasian electricity industry.

The Union of the Electricity Industry — EURELECTRIC is a non-governmental association formed in 1999. EURELECTRIC's mission is to contribute to the integration of the European electricity systems to promote market reforms in the electricity industry in the European countries. The current President of EURELECTRIC is Rafael Miranda Robredo.

The CIS Electric Power Council (CIS EPC) was established pursuant to the Agreement on coordination of interstate relations in the field of electric power industry of the Commonwealth of Independent States, which was signed by the Heads of the Governments of the CIS countries on 14 February 1992. The CIS EPC's mission is to coordinate the efforts to ensure stable and reliable energy supply to industries and households of the Member States as a result of enhanced efficiency of the interconnected electricity systems. The CIS Electric Power Council consists of the CEOs of electricity companies representing the CIS Member States: Republic of Azerbaijan, Republic of Armenia, Republic of Belarus, Republic of Georgia, Republic of Kazakhstan, Republic of Moldova, Russian Federation, Republic of Tajikistan, Republic of Turkmenistan, Republic of Uzbekistan, and Ukraine. Chairman of the Management Board of RAO "UES of Russia" Anatoly Chubais has been President of the CIS Electric Power Council since 2000.
