Moscow, 6 February 2007. According to recent reports, RAO UES power plants generated 66 billion kWh of electricity in January 2007. For the sake of comparison, they generated 70.3 billion kWh in January 2006, and 64.3 billion kWh in January 2005.
During the fist month of the year, energy consumption across Russia amounted to 92.3 billion kWh, down 3.8% compared to the same period of 2006.
Such reduction compared to January 2006 was due to fact that in January 2006 the ambient temperatures in most parts of Russia were lower than the norm for the time of the year. Because of that, RAO UES power plants had to increase electricity generation by 10. 3% compared to January 2005. On the other hand, January 2007 saw average temperatures as much as 8.9 degrees above the monthly normal and 11.2 degrees above the average temperatures of January 2006., However, electricity consumption throughout Russia and generation by RAO UES power plants in January 2007 significantly exceeded the long-term monthly averages.
Despite the warm weather last month, some of Russia's regions saw an increase in electricity consumption and, accordingly, generation had to be increased, too. For instance, electricity generation by RAO UES plants in the Tyumen Energy System grew 7.1 percent.
Due to the favourable hydrological situation in the reservoirs of the Volga-Kama chain of HPPs, part of the load was shifted from TPPs to HPPs. As a result, the output of HPPs in January grew 19.1 percent, while the output of TPPs fell 9.5 percent year on year.
